Apartment Tour: Tour a Small, Sunny Studio

I moved apartments this month and of course had to commemorate it with another apartment tour of my old place! (to see the tour of my first apartment in Connecticut, click here!) I now live in Fairfield, which is pretty neat and a lot closer to work.

I didn’t say it in my first apartment tour blog post, but I moved from one end of the building to the other end. For the first three and a half years of living in Connecticut, I lived in the same building in Stratford. The two apartments couldn’t be more different! My first one had dropped ceilings, orange walls, and a small kitchen. The second one had a huge kitchen, vaulted ceilings, and white walls. And now, I live in a new apartment complex with curved walls and noisy appliances.

There were a lot of great moments in this apartment, and here are things I don’t want to forget:

  • Batcat got stuck behind the washing machine one morning and wouldn’t get out. She can be such a little brat sometimes! I spent the morning shimmying the machine out and then running the vacuum cleaner at one end so she would get scared and run out. Please don’t report me to animal services.
  • Banjo recently caught his first mouse, which Batcat did a couple of times in my first apartment. A mouse must have snuck in through the gap under the door and we woke up to the sound of Banjo FLYING around the room chasing this little mouse. He even had it in his mouth at one point! We finally caught up to them and swept the little guy out the front door with a broom. I hope he’s not too traumatized.
  • Batcat found her favorite spot above the refrigerator. She would climb from the counter by the stove to the top of the refrigerator to the shelf above that – far away from everyone. We put a bed up there and if there was a time we couldn’t find her, there was a high chance she was hiding up there. Banjo was too little to jump up there which I think she appreciated.
  • I have a lot of memories of sitting at the breakfast bar counter drawing and blasting records on my record player. I loved that I didn’t have neighbors.
  • Right before I moved into this place, Patrick and I took a trip to IKEA hoping to find a wardrobe since my bedroom didn’t have any closets. We scored the black wardrobe for like $100 and he put it all together while the cats and I supervised.
  • In my first apartment, I had carpet everywhere, so having fake hardwood floor was a new experience for the cats. We spent many hours throwing toys in the kitchen and watching them slide all around. They didn’t have their sea legs apparently haha.

While this is mostly for me so I can remember one of my favorite apartments, I hope you enjoy the tour!

30 Things I’m Grateful For in February

The shortest month, but so many things happened in February! First… Banjo caught his first mouse. We woke up at 5am one morning to him chasing around a little gray mouse in my apartment! Baby cat’s growing up so fast. This month was also filled with a motorcycle show in Jersey, good food, and tons of moving boxes because as of March 3 I’ll be in a new apartment!

I’m very thankful for my bosses, coworker and the affordable housing act for helping me rent an apartment for less than $950/month. That’s crazy cheap in this area. Since my income is less than $50,000/year, I’m eligible for the more affordable rent. And no, I’m not afraid or embarrassed to talk about how much money I make (thank you, The Financial Diet). Sometimes it pays to be paid less than average.

I’ve lived in the same building in the same city for three and a half years. I’m so excited for a change of scenery, to find new restaurants to check out, to be closer to work, and to decorate my new apartment. Pictures to come but for now here is what I’m grateful for in February.

  • Going to the Cheap Thrills Show with Patrick
  • Making friends with the girl at the booth next to us and her giving me some much needed handwarmers
  • And scoring some cool artwork from Derwood Paint Co and Offshore Artwork
  • Watching the Super Bowl (but mostly for the commercials)
  • That my parents made it to New Zealand safely
  • Celebrating Chinese new year at Patrick’s moms house
  • Working on a cat puzzle with my cats
  • Russian Doll on Netflix
  • Peets coffee and Iron coffee
  • That my new phone has a long battery life
  • A Spark of Light by Jodi Picoult
  • CVS coupons
  • Free prescriptions
  • That I grew up in the Midwest and not on the East Coast
  • Talking to my sister’s boyfriend over Snapchat
  • L’oreal eye defense cream
  • Surprising my boyfriend with burgers and fries from Prime 16
  • And getting a funny picture from him for Valentine’s Day
  • That my bosses let me leave work early because of bad weather
  • Working on fun videos at work
  • Donating clothes, blankets and housewares to Plato’s Closet and Goodwill
  • Mr Clean magic erasers

  • A fun team dinner at my boss’s house
  • Moscato
  • Taking pictures of my apartment and creating my next house tour blog post
  • That I had a week to move into my new place
  • And that it’s totally brand new, bigger than the one I have now, that it’s a corner apartment, and that it’s closer to work

It’s so nice to work for people I actually like. I think that’s how it should be! I was also really inspired by the book I’ve been reading – Lean In.
